Storing Blonde On Blonde CDs, and double digi-pak boxes in the BOB DYLAN Archive

April 26, 2011

Because most CD versions of Blonde On Blonde are single discs, it did not seem to make sense to dedicate two storage spaces. Too many people would have an empty space where disc “two” would be.

The (very) notable CD exception, of course, is the remastered SACD version from a few years ago, which came as two discs packaged in a thicker than normal digi-pak box. Please take note that if you do have this two disc version you can store both CDs in the same single CD holding spot (use one of the paper disk coasters in between the discs to avoid friction between the discs). And note that the CD storage pages of the BOB DYLAN Archive were created to allow you to store extra thick (and double) digipak boxes. So, if you choose, you can store the extra thick digi-pak box for the SACD Blonde On Blonde, as demonstrated below.

Picture One below is of course the page for storing Blonde On Blonde (along with the three other chronological albums released around B.O.B. –Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61, and Greatest Hits– whew, not a bad 24 months.)

Pictures Two and Three, below, show the extra large digi-pak box for B.O.B., with the two CD trays. (The first photo, picture two, below is with the front cover closed but the right panel open exposing one CD tray. The second photo, picture three, below,  is with all panels open, flat, exposing both CD trays.)

To insert the digi-pak, close the front panel only as shown in picture two above, BUT TURN OVER THE DIGIPAK AND INSERT IT INTO THE BIG SLEEVE FROM BEHIND THE BACK OF THE  CD STORAGE PAGE–that is the CD page for storing the first four BOB DYLAN albums.

Pictures 4 and 5 below shows how to insert the partially  ”open” digipak (again, into the pocket behind the CD storage page for B.O.B.– which is actually the CD storage page for the first 4 albums). Slide the digi-pak box in so it inserts behind the page with the LP artwork for the first 4 albums…so, in front of the page with the artwork for Blonde On Blonde, Bringing It All, Highway 61, and Greatest Hits).

Picture 6 below will show how the page will look when you flip the CD storage page to go back to the page with Blonde On Blonde. You can see that the front cover of Blonde On Blonde digi-pak shows up in the Blonde On Blonde spot, and the tray for one of the discs shows up in the window under Greatest Hits– which, as you see in picture 7 below, you then cover with the Greatest Hits disc and CD booklet.

Here, below, is what it will look like when you store all the CDs with their CD booklets…

And of course, you can alternatively store the digipak boxes (for Bringing it All Back Home and Highway 61); or you can insert the mini LP sleeves for the MONO CDs of those albums..and/or, you can store the mini LP sleeve for the MONO CD of Blonde On Blonde.

Bob Dylan Greatest Hits Vol. II

April 12, 2011

You may notice that the BOB DYLAN Archive CD Storage book includes only one storage slot for this album/CD, even though it is a 2 CD release. We did this for practical reasons: because the slot below GHII is for the early 1970s Dylan which never appeared on CD, an album that never has officially appeared on CD (and most likely never will), we thought this would be a practical place for most collectors to store the second disc of GHII and avoid a “blank space” in their book (and we know how those blank spaces drive collectors crazy). If however you create your own “home made” Dylan CD (legally, of course, from your own LP version), you can alternatively store both CDs of GHII in the single CD storage space provided (you can actually store 2 CDs in any CD storage space in the CD Storage Book. We recommend using one of the paper CD coasters in between the CDs if stored this way).

Using the Velcro buttons that come with the BOB DYLAN Archive

March 29, 2011

The BOB DYLAN Archive comes with 48 sets of velcro buttons– a “set” meaning a “male” and “female” button that hook up with each other (you decide which is the male and which is the female). These are offered as a suggested way to ensure your CDs stay securely in place, if you move them in and out of the Storage Book often; and particularly if you choose to store any of the digi-pak boxes for some of your CDs. The digi-paks are bulky, and the velcro helps fasten the vinyl page around the entire digi-pak to hold it more securely in place.

If you are only going to store the CD booklets and CDs, then you probably will never need the velcro buttons. You probably do not need them either if you store the mini LP sleeves the recent mono CDs are packaged in, as these fit nice and snugly themselves. However, if you want the extra security, especially if you are accessing the CDs often, the velcro buttons work well.

The best way to apply the buttons is first insert a CD in the CD holding space (for extra protection, insert with one of the provided, protective CD coasters underneath the CD); insert the corresponding digi-pak box, or mini-LP sleeve, in the CD booklet space. Then peel off a male and female button, hook them up with each other, and then apply the sticky side of one onto the CD storage page (see location suggestion below). Finally press the overlaying vinyl pocket onto the other sticky side of your velcro “couple” and it will adhere to the back of that pocket.

{COMMENT: Hi Jon

Peter here (in Montreal).
In regards to the velcro tabs, I thought it may be worth mentioning that when applying them to the binder pages, it may be wiser to put the “softer” sided piece on the page, and the “harsher” side on the cover/flap.
The softer side is less like to scratch against the CD as its being slid out (should the coaster remain in the pocket).
Still loving the BOV.
kindest regards,
Peter  }

LOCATION SUGGESTION:

If you are storing the mini LP sleeve for the CD (e.g., the sleeve for the recent “mono” releases ) the best spot to place the velcro buttons is right at the outer corner of the mini LP sleeve. See below.

If you are storing a dig-pak box, the best spot is just above the outside corner (if you are applying this to a CD on the top part of the page) or just below the outside corner (if you are applying this to a CD on the bottom of the page). See below…and note below that I am showing the male part of the CD button, in place and adhered to the CD page, and the female piece already adhered to the overlaying pocket that is bent here. Again, however: it is best to apply the dots hooked up together and adhere them to the page first, then press the overlaying pocket onto the sticky back of the female piece. Then, when you carefully “un-hook” them to get to your CDs, they will each be in perfect position.

In the bottom photo, bottom right, is New Morning, with just the CD booklet. Fits nice and snug all by itself, and truly the easiest and most elegant way to store all of your CDs– if you are planning to access them often. (You have the large size LP artwork in the LP Artbook– why not just put the digi-paks away in storage?)

Your comments and questions welcome…if its confusing let me know and i will keep trying until I make it clear.
